Tonbridge Remembrance Garden
Type:
Landscape Design and Restoration
Client:
Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council
Enplan was commissioned to design and oversee the construction of a comprehensive enhancement to the public garden surrounding the Memorial Wall, which records the names of local residents who fell in both World Wars.
The scheme was jointly funded by the Borough Council, the Royal British Legion, and public donations.
As the setting for the Remembrance Sunday service, the design provides an appropriate sense of ‘theatre’ through subtle level changes and a refined, simple composition of high-quality hard materials, including elliptical Yorkstone steps and curved brick walls with stone copings visually aligned with the Memorial Wall. The hard landscape is enriched with seasonal planning, including six semi-mature Liquidambar trees for November colour, and a commissioned ceramic poppy sculpture by Guy Portelli.
