An external works scheme for the conversion of a Grade II listed 1930s modernist country house into high-value apartments, together with two new residential blocks within the grounds, designed by Broadway Malyan Architects.
Completed in 1938 and designed by Adie, Button & Partners, Charters in Ascot is regarded as a landmark of 1930s modernism. The house inherited mature parkland from the earlier mid-Victorian estate, but its defining 1930s landscape features include the cascade and pools of the “Water Features”, the Portland stone terrace, colonnade, steps, planters and the sweeping curved drive to the main entrance.
The new landscape scheme reinstates the historic parkland structure — including the water gardens — and introduces new driveways and entrances, as well as courtyards, terraces and roof gardens. The project won the Evening Standard Award for Best Residential Scheme in 2008.
