Newton's Cove Protection Scheme

A £2 million “sea wall” project to protect the coast line whilst providing a contemporary promenade. Enplan established the overall design concept and undertook the detailed design of hard surfacing, finishes and planting. Twin Portland Stone walls are curved in two places to mimic the facing local Dorset cliffline, split by a central flight of steps connecting the promenade to the residential area. Working within an SSSI, the form of the scheme and the working methods had to safeguard the local ecological and geological features. Winner of a BCIA Environment Award and short-listed for the ‘Prime Minister’s Better Public Building Award’. The judges said “This scheme represents a visually important contribution to the defence of the sea wall in Weymouth. But more than that, it is an excellent example of a contemporary promenade with a ‘corniche’ atmosphere”.
